Maintaining dental health does not have to be difficult. Simple steps – such as making sure you are brushing your teeth properly – can make a big difference. First, experts suggest that people should make sure they use a toothbrush with soft nylon bristles that sustain contact with both the gum line and the surface of the teeth.

Keeping the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle, it is best to start by concentrating on two to three teeth at a time. Dental professionals have found that this angle is more effective at eliminating bacteria and plaque. The action should be a back-and-forth circular motion when addressing the front of the teeth. Moving on to the backs of the teeth, the brusher should switch to up-and-down strokes. Then, the bristles should be placed directly against the biting surfaces of the teeth for gentle scrubbing.

Finally, running the brush lightly along the tongue will help remove odors and bacteria. The entire brushing process should take around two minutes, experts suggest. Toothbrushes should be replaced every three months or when they begin to show wear.
